In a big bowl, cream butter and sugar till gentle and fluffy.
Add eggs, separately, beating nicely after every addition. Beat in vanilla.
Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; add to creamed combination alternately with buttermilk, beating nicely after every addition.
Pour right into a greased and floured 10-in. tube pan. Bake at 350° till a toothpick inserted in heart comes out clear, 55-70 minutes. Cool 10 minutes. Run a knife round edges and heart tube of pan. Invert cake onto a wire rack over waxed paper.
For sauce, mix the sugar, butter and water in a small saucepan. Prepare dinner over medium warmth simply till butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Take away from the warmth; stir in extracts.
