- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb ground pork
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup cooked and chopped mushrooms (optional)
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Core the cabbage and place it in a large pot of boiling water. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the leaves are soft and pliable. Remove the cabbage and let it cool.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, minced garlic, mushrooms (if using), egg, salt, pepper, thyme, and oregano. Mix well.
- Carefully peel off the cabbage leaves one by one, trimming the thick center stem.
- Place a spoonful of the meat mixture onto each cabbage leaf and roll it up, tucking in the sides to form a tight roll.
- In a separate bowl, mix the crushed tomatoes, beef or vegetable broth. Pour a small amount of this mixture into the bottom of a baking dish.
- Arrange the cabbage rolls in the baking dish, seam side down.
- Pour the remaining tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 1 to 1.5 hours or until the cabbage is tender and the meat is cooked through.
- While the rolls are baking, prepare the tomato sauce by combining crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, salt, and pepper in a saucepan. Simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
- Once the cabbage rolls are done, serve them hot with the tomato sauce.
